Yoko Ono Day...

Not sure how many of you out there remember the day Yoko Ono and John Lennon spent in bed. A bed-sit-in? Oops, just Googled it and according to Wikipedia (taken with a grain of salt), the term is 'bed-in'! For those who don't remember - John and Yoko spent 2 weeks in bed in 1969 to promote peace. They did other bed-ins after than - kind of like sequels - but the point of my story (and, really, there is one) is the idea of staying in bed!

A while back, when I was teaching, I had had a most horrific week and spent Saturday at school (where else do teachers spend their weekends?) trying to get caught up and ahead. By Sunday, I was exhausted and declared to The Husband that I was having a Yoko Ono Day. The term, and the idea, stuck. And since then I've enjoye many Yoko Ono Days.

It seems like the past year and, especially, the last 6 months have been nothing but work, renovating, and more work. The past week, getting the submission ready to go and working the Day Job (which had its own issues over and above the regular Day Job stuff), wore me out! So, with the rain teeming down and nothing really pressing, I declared it to be a Yoko Ono Day.

Heaven!! I had coffee. I made pancakes for brunch (love pancakes, hate the work - although once you do them, they don't seem to be so bad - just like making bread). I watched A Room with a View (love that movie). And I read!!!!! A whole book - I can't even remember when I sat down and read a book cover to cover in a day (I used to do it all the time - I have a summer of '86 record of reading 70 books - I don't think I'll ever do that again).

In otherwords, I had a great day. A Yoko Ono Day :) Gotta love them!

Do you take Yoko Ono Days, People of Blogland? Do you like pancakes? What was the last book you read cover to cover? BTW - I made blueberry maple syrup for the pancakes (a cup of maple syrup and a 1/2 cup frozen blueberries boiled together for a minute), absolutely wonderful!!

Oh, the book I read: Room by Emma Donoghue (thanks to Lynn for lending it to me). Excellent!

  1. I love pancakes but I love my homemade waffles more. Their made with egg whites and are soooo light and fluffy! I don't often get the chance for a Hideaway Day. (That's what I call my version of a Yoko Ono day.) With three other people, two dogs, and the cat, there are lots of demands for my time and attention. Once in a great while, though, I can salvage a Saturday to lounge in bed, catch up on the DVR list and reading. Most times, though, my brain is firing and I want to write. Crap. That reminds me. I had a scene floating around in my head early this morning and I didn't write it down because I was convinced I would remember it. And I promptly forgot it. It had to do with ego. And now I'm going to freak until I can reconstruct it. *sigh*

Okay, really glad you had a terrific day! We all need time to recharge like that. :D And now I'm off to pace until I recall the conversation and where it needed to be added into the plot line. Argh. Later!

  2. That sounds like a marvelous way to spend a day, Janet. I assume there's at least some vacating of the bed now and then, of course. Do you shower or stay PJ-bound? :) I can never stand PJs for longer than an hour once I'm awake, for some reason.

Last cover-to-cover was.. I think Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. Maybe not, I'm losing track. It's been a while though, my current read is much slower.

As for pancakes, I make awesome pancakes apparently, but can never eat more than a couple myself.

  3. I am so jealous. I fantasize about a "day in bed". Perhaps once we're empty nesters.

Love pancakes. I made some yesterday too - pumpkin spice. Too good. I've done the blueberry/maple syrup before. So easy, and it adds fruit to the diet, hehe.

I honestly can't remember the last book I read in one day. Must have been BK (before kids), so we're talking 18 years. Oh, that's sad. Something else to schedule for the empty nest.

I glad you took a day for yourself. Those are important. And you certainly earned it!

  4. Your day sounds like it was awesome. The last time I spent the day in bed, I was sick. I do spend the day on the couch from time to time, though - reading, writing, crocheting and watching boatloads of TV.

I love pancakes, but I'm more a french toast gal - with vanilla and cinnamon in the batter. Mmmm. =o)

  5. Sounds like a heavenly day, Janet, and I love pancakes. The pumpkin spice idea above sounds great!

  6. You pace, too? The best way I know how to recreate a lost scene or get the idea for something that's not coming together. Oh, I also mumble to myself while I'm pacing.

Love the idea of egg white waffles. I've never made waffles - but I do love them!

    Write, write, write Silver!

  7. I have a friend, Hayley, who has coined the term "pancake stomach" - that overfull feeling when you eat way too many pancakes. I can't eat pancakes without thinking about that. And I never eat too many - fear of "pancake stomach"! My favorite part of pancakes is the bacon I make (turkey bacon these days). Bacon in maple syrup is the best (sweet/salty).

I do get out of my PJs (most Yoko Ono Days) just because the dog usually needs out and I get cold wandering around in the pjs outside. Yesterday, I didn't do a full bed-sit-in - I sat in my favorite chair at the window and read. Absolutely wonderful :)

I need to find a copy of Speak - I've heard it's very good!

  8. You're going to love 'empty nest syndrome', Lu! Yoko Ono Days, reading for hours on end - OK, since I've always been an empty nester, you will probably miss you kids, too.

    Pumpkin Spice pancakes - yummy!!

  9. It was, B.E.! And I don't do a true Yoko Ono Day - most times I get up and move to the couch or a favorite chair. The most important thing is to spend the day the way you want (reading, crocheting, watching TV counts). A total relaxation day - gotta love it.

I love French Toast - yummy with vanilla.

  11. What a great idea! Years ago, my husband and I watched all the World Cup football games in bed. We were spending our holidays at home and all the games were early in the morning (being played in Europe somewhere). Extreme luxury, as I remember it.

I very seldom do pancakes anymore, just when the grandchildren visit.

Staying in bed is even better with books. The last title I read in one sitting/lie-in was Coventry by Helen Humphreys. I started reading at 10 pm and finished at about 2:30 am. It's a short novel about the bombing and burning of Coventry, Eng. in WWII. During the July night I was reading it, there was a huge thunderstorm with hail the size of golf balls ... a blitz without the fire! No way I could have slept, but I was utterly engrossed in the book, anyway.

Hope this week isn't as crazy for you as last week!

  12. The week seems to be starting off slower - but it's only Monday ;)

I always love to hear about books that people read in one sitting - I know it's going to be a good one. I've written the title down in my TBR Book of Books and I'll be sure to look for it.

BTW - I think you would really love Room!
