I was so excited - finally updated my browser, had been using Windows Explorer #7 and kept getting messages like "You're using an outdated browser, some functions of our website will not work"! At first, I downloaded Google Chrome because I had heard good things about it - but nothing looked the same (and I couldn't figure out how to get my Favorite Bar (computer-speak, not the watering hole kind) to show up on my screen). So I re-instated my computer to the day before I downloaded (yes, I am lazy and find that's easier than uninstalling something), and moved on up to Windows 8! Wow, I had no idea what I was missing!
Especially in Blogger! The excitement I had when I changed over to the new Blogger Editor (which is so user friendly, especially with picture formatting - always had a problem with that) pales in comparison to the new features now that I have a modern browser. Cleaner, easier to navigate - and pageviews (OK, that's going to be a distraction - did you know that I had six visitors to the blog from Slovakia?)! But the big excitement came with Blogger News popping up on Saturday...
THREADED COMMENTS!!!!!
I've been waiting forever for threaded comments. For those who don't know, threaded comments would allow me to comment on a comment right below the comment - not down at the bottom after all the other comments. And then, if you wanted to comment on my comment about the comment, you could reply right there - we'd have a little mini-discussion in the comment section! A really cool feature of Wordpress that I've been wishing Blogger would implement.
Imagine my disappointment when I followed the instructions and went back to my blog, clicked on a post that had lots of comments to try out the new feature and got a white screen. Nothing but white. I wasn't too worried because it wasn't a blue screen - blue screens are like staring at the lifeless body of your computer - blue screen means you done computing for a while. No, this was a white screen. So I went back to the original set up and then tried it again. Nope - white screen!
Then I started Googling "white screen after changing Blogger" because I didn't know how else to word my inquiry. Thank you, Google - finally found some interesting information. There are glitches! Hmmm - glitches are not good. So, long story (and isn't this a long story), I will have to wait until Blogger gets those glitches ironed out before I can change my comments over to threaded comments! Boo :(
But, hey, now I can spend countless hours looking at my page views. Did you know that National Teacher Day has the most hits? Interesting!
What got you excited this past weekend, People of Blogland? Bonus points if you use 'comment' in your comment - because didn't I use that word a lot in this post! Coffee - stat!

I'm a Firefox user because of some of the glitches Internet Explorer was causing (some with Blogger - like I couldn't comment on certain blogs). Also, it was crashing my husband's laptop, so I switched him over, too. Firefox is lovelyful. =o)
ReplyDeleteHeh, reading blog stats is fun. My biggest page ever is the one where I talk about the Daring Jumping Spider. "black spider with green fangs" is a big key phrase for me. Not writing... spiders. Go figure.
Captcha code today: tripoo Seriously. I can't make this stuff up.
I love Firefox, too. I had to switch because my email provider did something to their email system and I couldn't access my inbox. Not great when you're trying to query. The helpline guy figured out the day before how to deal with the problem. I had to switch to Firefox. I haven't looked back since.
ReplyDeleteI've heard of a number of bloggers who've had experience similar issues, Janet. That's why I'm leaving good enough alone. :D
I love the captcha words - computer generated? I think not - someone's hired to come up with these words!!!
ReplyDeleteOoh, interesting post - must go and check it out, B.E. and, therefore, up your pageviews for that post even more ;)
Firefox, eh?
Yea, Stina - seems like I'm not the only one. I thought maybe I had done something wrong since I'm not the best at technology, but wasn't just me. Hopefully they get it figured out - I do love threaded comments.
ReplyDeleteAnother Firefox Fan, eh?
Definitely want your inbox working when querying! That would be very frustrating - and nerve-wrecking - if you were waiting word back from an agent or publisher!
Thanks for stopping by :)
I use Firefox but my tech guru comments often that I really need to switch over to Chrome. Like you, Janet, I couldn't figure out how to get the tool bar that I want and depend on in Firefox. However, I'm "upgrading" my Mac Air this trip to Florida, returning with the bigger memory version and a Mac Pro for Lawyer Guy. I'll have TG show me how to set up tool bars in Chrome and if I can figure it out and like it, I'll comment about it to you. Firefox is my comfort zone, though, as many have commented here.
ReplyDeleteWait! There's a Windows 8? I'm using Windows 7 and actually like it. I switched over after I started having issues with LINUX on the desktop. I've been a Mac OSX user on the laptop forever it seems like. (Should I mention that I'm still more comfortable in Windows, despite all the bad things about the OS?)
Excitement? Let's see...I submitted FAERIE FOOL and I leave tomorrow for Florida. I should be running errands and packing but here I am commenting on your blog.
Okay. I think that is all I have to comment on at the moment. And you seem to get the best captcha words.
Nice 'comment' count, Silver!!! LOL!
ReplyDeleteNice - go to Florida for sun and sand AND get your computer upgraded. I need to find me a tech guy who lives somewhere warm ;) I look forward to hearing your comments about Chrome! And, yes, there is an 8 - there's a 9, too, but that's for computers past the XP age! So far, Windows 8, so good!
So excited about FAERIE FOOL - can't wait to hear all about it when you get word back from your editor :)
Safe journey - have fun - drink a margarita for me, K?
Okay - I give up. What is a captcha word and where do you find such beasties?
ReplyDeleteHow do you go from Vista to Windows 8? Is it a program you have to buy? I'm a lost soul when it comes to computers. I looked at a program at the local community school. $847.00 and it wasn't what I wanted. I didn't sign up.
I have two problems with Chrome: I don't need my password to open my mail and I haven't got a good writing program.
Kinda sorta a tool bar appears when you click on the wrench at the top of the chrome page. It is most of what File has.
There is this lovely man who has retrieved my contact list and MY PHOTOS from the corpse of my previous computer. I am going out to buy him a Ferrari today.
Yes, Firefox uber alles. Hey, that's 11 or 12 German words I know as the result of two German language courses....
Yes! I will drink a Margarita for you any time!
connie

So glad to hear you've retrieved your photos and contact list, Connie. That would be the worst...which reminds me, a good time to do some backing up :)
ReplyDeleteCaptcha is the word verification you have to fill out before you can post your comment. Some of them are pretty funny.
Windows Explorer (Internet) and Vista are two different things. Don't ask me how they're different, but they are. Windows 8 is similar to Chrome or Firefox - for your Internet activities. Vista is your computer's operating system. That's all I got!
Hi Janet,
ReplyDeleteI can see how not being able to directly comment in the comment section of your blog would lead you to comment on that glitch in today's blog.
I just looked at my captcha word and it is my lawyer's name. Does this bode ill?
ReplyDeleteback up back up back up back up. I am thinking about having that tatooed on my hand - or maybe taped to the computer is better
thanks for the clue ins!
