First, some links - an article I read thanks to one of my book club members (thanks, Janet), something that really struck a chord with me. In the comment section yesterday (and, yes, that was a rather deep subject for a Monday), we talked about distractions. I was reminded of the article and wanted to pass it on to anyone who was interested. The author, Pico Iyer, is talking about our need to be plugged-in and how many of us want to unplug. I found it fascinating that there are Internet Rescue Camps, software that enables the user to disable the Internet for periods of time, and hotels that promise an un-plugged stay for their clients (these are called Black Hole Resorts).
The article is fascinating - The Joy of Quiet
Second - thanks to Karyn, I've found a new blog that I am absolutely loving! I will warn you, the language is crude and his humour is dark and twisted - but his points on writing are striking a chord with me (more striking, more chords)! Today's post: 25 Things Writers Should Start Doing has come at the perfect time for me (that Universe again). Number 21 on the list really struck, er, got me - almost made me cry! Thanks Chuck Wendig for inspiration, motivation and making me start my day with laughter and tears (the yin and yang of emotions)!
Third - there is no third! Have I not shared enough? You already know that I relish Quiet and I'm an emotional basket case - and it's only Tuesday!! Enjoy your day, People of Blogland :)
Yup, Wendig can be kinda crass but his posts are spot on. Love his venn-diagram. I just wish my black space was a whole lot bigger.
ReplyDeleteUnplug? :shudder: Perish the thought. If I unplugged, I'd miss all my internet friends - like you. =o)
Have a great Tuesday, Janet. And good luck with #21. :hugs:
He does have a way of getting his point across! There were several points that made an impact - now to keep that in mind today, tomorrow and the next day.
ReplyDeleteI'm having a terrible time with distractions! I need to go read that post. And the idea that there's Internet rescue camps makes me sad.
Hey, B.E. - the article mentioned a designer who 'unplugged', but I thought of all the things he's missing (including cutting edge information about his job). I could see an Internet free time - or vacation, but can't see being unplugged forever!! BTW - I'd miss you, too.
ReplyDeleteThe Venn Diagram is priceless - I'd like my black space to be bigger, too!!
It is sad, Karyn, to think that we need to have a 12 Step Program to ween ourselves off of all the technology we created! But I can see the need whenever I go out - everyone's eyes glued to miniture screens or talking on cell phones. We're addicted to 'instant' communication!
ReplyDeleteUm, aren't you supposed to be doing BIAW this week? Distractions be gone! Unplug that Internet, my friend, and get writing ;)
Personally, I liked #6 and #23 best. Thanks, Janet. I'm adding his blog to my Reader.
ReplyDeleteThose are good ones, Janice - and you're welcome :)
ReplyDeleteI love Chuck and have his writing book. Yes. He's as crass as his blog but man does he have great insight!
ReplyDeleteI haven't been on twitter for almost 3 weeks...or four now. I've lost track. Part of me wants to open the window but there's another small part that is sort of glad. Until I get all my NRCA paperwork done (300 mailing labels and 300 judging sheets made up and printed) I'm keeping a very low internet profile. Even so, I think I'd be a nervous wreck if I totally unplugged!
FYI, I'm 30 pages in on my FOOL revisions. Once my eyes cross from copy-paste-save-click-print, I'll take a break and work on it some more. I want to start writing NEW words! Desperately!
Yikes, Silver - 300 labels and judging sheets? No wonder you've got your head down!! Good luck with that.
ReplyDeleteSo excited to hear that you're working on FAERIE FOOL Revisions. I hear you about the cross-eyed issue - I struggle with keeping my computer on after The Day Job's over just because I really don't want to sit and look at the screen any more. But I can't wait to hear about your new words - you'll get there!
Will. Not. Succumb. To. Twitter.
