Not Fair...

A new year – a new beginning – and sabotage comes in the mail!!

I know I’m not the only one trying to eat better as part of a healthier 2012 – even those that just want to spend a month trying to eat better after a couple of weeks (or a full month) of Christmas Indulgence are looking for healthy choices. And I will admit it’s hard to get back to regular, healthy eating – the sweets and snacks taste so much better than lettuce and spinach and fruit.

Then there’s the issue of my addiction! Everyone who knows me knows I have a love of all things greasy and fried. Fried potatoes in the form of chips or French fries – check! Fried onions, burgers, chicken, eggs in a little bacon fat, ooh bacon – check! And I love bread, but bread fried (as in donut) – check, check, check!!! I have even eaten fried cheese – OMG, fried cheese is the best, but take a jalapeno pepper, stuff it with cream cheese, bread it and fry it…Need I say more?

So eating well, for me, usually means trying to stay away from town and all the temptations. Obviously, the marketing people have found out about my strategy because they’ve sent me coupons in the mail!
Coupons! Tempting me with burgers and fries, onion rings, fried egg breakfast sandwiches, even a wonderful fried fish sandwich! They must also be aware of my love of all things ON SALE! Coupons! Fried foods on sale! I’m doomed!

How's your January Healthy Eating coming along, People of Blogland? Any temptations arrive in your mailbox? If you're a fried food/fast food addict and you could only choose one item, which would it be? If you're not a fried food/fast food addict, what unhealthy food would tempt you away from clean eating?

  1. That picture made me start salivating, so I guess I'm a sucker for the fried too. Onion rings are my fave indulgence. I may be lucky though, because they've started disagreeing with my tummy. I have to think long and hard before deciding the breaded, fried, sweet rings of delight are worth a few hours of blech.

Good, hand-cut with a lot of skin attached fries are tasty. I'm a sucker for the fries from Swiss Chalet.

And then there are potato chips. Yum! A fabulous delivery system for salty, greasy goodness.

I think it's terribly unfair that your local retailers are enticing you with coupons. It's like they don't care that this is a tenuous time for resolutions. Where is their heart?

  2. Don't look at me. I'm still eating Christmas treats. Heck, I probably have a half pound of fudge left. And my husband got tired of goodies about the day after Christmas, so if I don't eat them... :sigh:

Temptations don't usually arrive in the mailbox here, but that's okay because the TV commercials and cooking shows are filling the gap. I swear Guy Fieri is in league with Olive Garden to fatten me up.

  3. They're heartless *&(#&%^&@s, Lu - no heart whatsoever!

I've had the same experience with onion rings recently - let's not say it's due to age, k? It hasn't been so bad as to stop me from ordering them, hopefully it doesn't get that bad.

MMM, chips - I've been doing a lot of reading on endurance running and nutrition - do you know that some long, long distance races have chips available at the water aid stations! Hmm, must be good for you, eh? The salt is important when running that far - I think that's a great excuse to run that far: chips as fuel!

I used to love New York Fries - do they still have them in food courts? Ooh, with lots of malt vinegar. OK, now I'm really hungry!

  4. It's a good thing I don't get the Food Channel, B.E.! But I do get the commercials - over Christmas it was Kentucky Fried Chicken every time a commercial came on. I stayed strong, but was I ever tempted. Love KFC!

Yikes on the fudge - has your daughter gone back to school? Maybe package it up for her to take back to all the young ones to eat - they seem to have a higher metabolism!

  5. I love a good burger and fries. Even a mediocre burger and fries will do. They just opened a Five Guys Burgers and Fries joint practically next door. Yummy! But TOO close.

    Have fun shredding those coupons!

  6. She's still home, but weight's a battle for her, too. She was cursed with a slow metabolism. So I'm trying to steer her clear toward healthier options. And to that end, I'm throwing myself on the fudge grenade. Better me than her right now.

OMG, KFC... Thank goodness we don't have one around here anywhere.

  7. 1. My January healthy eating is coming along slowly. I try to be gentle on myself because after all, it is a sickness ya know! I am an addict!
    2. Yes, I've received those same coupons but I'm fortunate in that I only require a "good dose of grease" (as I call it) about once a month.
    3. My one fast food item would be a cheeseburger (and probably a Quarter Pounder from MacDonalds .... she says red-faced!!)
    4. The unhealthy food that always tempts me is having something sweet after dinner! Anything sweet and sugary will do; I'm a product of my upbringing where my Mom always had dessert for my Dad. And post-Xmas is always a challenge for me to get the sugar monkey off my back.

Good luck Janet! Be gentle on yourself!

  9. Hamburgers. With bacon and cheddar cheese and guacamole and BBQ sauce. OH Oh and salty french fries and jalapeño poppers (you made my mouth water) and nachos....

You get the idea. I feel your pain Janet, I just LOVE that kind of food. Thankfully no one has sabotaged my mailbox yet, just my brain. :D

  10. Shred the coupons? I never even thought of that - I don't know if I can, Karyn!

I've heard of Five Guys Burger, but never eaten at one. Have you - are they good? I wonder if there's such a thing down this way...of to check the Internet :)

  11. You're a good mom, B.E. - taking one for the team ;)

  12. Thanks, Sandy - I'll try to be gentle and forgiving (that's the big thing - not to make a simple cheeseburger into a guilty foray into more cheeseburgers and then fries - I tend to work that way ;)

You've got the right attitude - and slow and steady wins the race!

Ooh, Quarter Pounder - that sounds yummy!!

  13. I had porridge for breakfast one day this week, Connie. We do a quick version in the microwave (my Scottish relatives would be having a fit) - 1/3c quick cooking oats, 3/4c milk (can't stand oatmeal made with water) and nuke on high for a minute, stir, nuke on high for another minute and done. Of course, before nuking, I like to add a little brown sugar, some applesauce, dried cranberries, slivered almonds and some cinnamon. It's actually quite good!

  14. Oops - hope that wasn't me sabotaging your brain, Erika!!

    Ooh, nachos!!

I love bacon - so on a burger, absolutely. But I've never had guacamole on a burger - do you think that would up the healthy quotient since avocado is supposed to be a form of healthy fat?

Guacamole on nachos - I'm starting to see a possible supper menu item - must.be.strong!
